Park Theatre Collective 50+ Group Autumn 2021

23 September 2021 - 02 December 2021

What is it?

This weekly in-person course is a wonderful way to explore acting techniques and devising skills in a safe, fun and supportive environment. This group will gain unique access to conversations with the creative team from A Place for We by Archie Maddocks, co-produced by Park Theatre & Talawa Theatre Company, and will take inspiration from the production to create short pieces of theatre and explore a variety of scripts by established playwrights. We will share extracts from the work created and explored during the course in a scratch night on our last session - Thu 02 Dec in the theatre’s Morris Space.

Course Content

This course is split between the three elements of devising, practical exploration of scripts by established playwrights; contemporary & classical, and building knowledge and understanding of A Place for We through discussions with various members of the creative team working on the production. These sessions will be fun, accessible and collaborative and open to anyone aged 50+ who has a passion for theatre and storytelling.

Weeks 1-2:
The first 2 weeks will be spent getting to know each other and becoming familiar with the themes of ‘A Place for We’ by Archie Maddocks. We will also begin to explore acting and devising techniques through being introduced to practitioners such as Stanislavski, Anthony Meindl and companies such as Complicité.

Weeks 3-4:
These weeks will be spent delving into character work within scripts - looking at extracts from ‘A Place for We’, as well as other plays with similar themes.

Week 5:
We will spend this week enabling each other to find our own artistic identity. Through writing, acting and devising exercises, we will discover what stories we want to tell and the different ways we can express them.

Weeks 6-9:
During these weeks we will build on the stories created, scripts worked on and techniques explored in the first half of the course, and discover a whole approach to theatre making through creating & rehearsing short extracts to share in an end-of-term scratch night.

Week 10:
In our final session together we will warm-up, rehearse and present a relaxed sharing of our work in a scratch night followed by a well-deserved celebration in the bar!
